The following chapter update from Iota Theta/University of Central Florida was submitted by Alex Mosley, the chapter's Director of Public Relations:The end of the Fall 2008 semester was a very exciting time for the Iota Theta Chapter and we are very proud to share with you some of our recent accomplishments. In keeping with the maxim, “Alma Mater first, Theta Chi for Alma Mater,” our Chapter has maintained the best overall GPA among all UCF Fraternities for the second semester in a row (Spring and Fall 2008). As the fourth largest Fraternity at UCF with 101 initiated brothers, this shows the extent of dedication that we put forth in keeping a high academic level.
Fall semester rush proved to be a success us as well. Epsilon Class took the New Member Education period very seriously and a grand total of 24 young men were initiated on November 14th at the Oviedo Presbyterian Church in Oviedo. Membership in Theta Chi is not arbitrarily handed out—our chapter seeks only the very best and brightest, and this class certainly delivered with a semester GPA of 3.134. Together, we look forward to seeing what these outstanding gentlemen will accomplish in the future.
Our Chapter has also maintained excellent relations with other Greek organizations on campus. In the past semester, Iota Theta was honored in having three Sorority Sweethearts: Brother Austin Purvis won Alpha Xi Delta’s “Xi Man” competition; Brother Chris Morata won Kappa Alpha Theta’s “Mr. CASAnova” competition; and Brother Tyson Nales won Alpha Delta Pi’s “Hoops and Hogs MVP.” Tyson Nales was also crowned the new 2009 Mr. UCF in late October 2008. Iota Theta also put on a great show by receiving 1st place among Fraternities in Kappa Delta’s Shakedown dance competition. In addition, we are very proud of our accomplishments during UCF’s 2008 Homecoming week, where we deservingly received Greek 1st place in the Dance & Skit event of Homecoming week as well as Greek 2nd place overall.
On November 22nd, our Chapter held its Fall Philanthropy—the 1st Annual Helping Hand 5k race, BBQ, and Concert. This philanthropy was created in memory of a brother who passed away last year due to a drunk driving accident and therefore, the Helping Hand Foundation was founded in order to dedicate to increasing awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and promoting responsible retailers, responsible behavior, and reducing risks around the Central Florida community. The event was hosted at University of Central Florida’s Memory Mall, and after the race the participants enjoyed catered food by Bubbalou’s BBQ and featured entertainment by live bands and guest speakers. The Helping Hand 5k event proved to be a success, and Iota Theta plans to continue with this philanthropy for the years to come. As a young chapter, we are extremely proud of our recent accomplishments, and we look forward to all that we will accomplish in the coming years.
